Biosphere 2013 - 'The Cost of Comfort'


Our mission:To investigate the very important connections between the biotic (living) factors and the abiotic (non-living) parts of an environment & how we can make a difference.

Day 1 - Blandy Experimental FarmToday we went to Blandy Experimental Farm and learned about water quality which included PH, Turbidity, and the process of testing dissolved oxygen levels in the water. We also learned about how water quality affects macroinvertebrates, and how to classify the different species.Day 2 - Shenandoah River Estate ParkToday we went on a 2-mile kayak trip on the Shenandoah river, and also got to enjoy a very bumpy ride down to the water on a wagon.

Day 3 - Field Work (Water Quality Testing)Today we went to the Shenandoah County Park to test water quality and also try to find some macroinvertebrates. And we also madeTie-Dye T-shirts.

Day 4 - Community Service & BREGS Picnic Day

Day 5 - Frederick County LandfillToday we visited the Frederick County Landfill and learned about how they bury the trash and all of the processes they have togo through to make sure that it is safe and won't pollute ground water or air along with how recycling has made a big difference in theamount of trash buried in the landfill. We also learned that not everything is biodegradable and how they reuse the nonbiodegradable materials.
